  • Cluster
    • Data by Cluster

A cluster is a regional concentration of related industries that arise out of the various types of linkages or externalities that span across industries in a particular location. The U.S. Benchmark Cluster Definitions are designed to enable systemic comparison across regions. View and compare clusters across the U.S.

688th Information Operations Wing, U.S. Department of Defense - Air Force

Background/History of the Laboratory:
The Air Force Information Operations Center (AFIOC) is located on Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) in San Antonio, Tex. The AFIOC is an information superiority center of excellence dedicated to offensive and defensive counterinformation and information operations.

The AFIOC originally activated as the 6901st Special Communications Center in July 1953. The following month, the 6901st redesignated as the Air Force Special Communications Center, becoming the Air Force Electronic Warfare Center (AFEWC) in 1975. Air Force successes in exploiting enemy information systems during Operation DESERT STORM led to the realization that the strategies and tactics of command and control warfare (C2W) could be expanded to the entire information spectrum and be implemented as information warfare. In response, the AFIOC activated 10 September 1993, combining technical skill sets from the former AFEWC with the Air Force Cryptologic Support Center's Securities Directorate and intelligence capabilities from the former Air Force Intelligence Command.

AFIOC's team of more than 1,000 military and civilian members are skilled in the areas of operations, engineering, operations research, intelligence, radar technology, communications and computer applications. The members provide improved C2W and information operations (IO) capabilities to the warfighting USAF major commands.

Mission of the Laboratory:
AFIOC is the Air Force's center of excellence for information operations. AFIOC is responsible for creating the information operations advantage for combatant forces through exploring, developing, applying and transitioning counterinformation technology, strategy, tactics and data to control the information battlespace and providing the world's best IO leaders.
