Philadelphia Game lab is a non-profit entity (501c3) dedicated to enabling economic development and visibility of opportunities in small-team creative technology in its region and beyond. As such, it defines specific areas of focus, working with leading industry experts to identify strategic direction and projects aligned with such strategies, binding them to regional expertise, especially in university communities of both students and academics.
In addition to this primary mission, we recognize that the nature of our home region allows us potential to be substantive leaders in enabling new voices and participation in creative technology. We have a uniquely diverse group of game developers, while also working to enable tools for game creation in underserved communities. These include “flip,” a browser-based 3D game creation tool for middle and high school students and “sonic,” a low-level toolset for creation of 3D audio games, aspects of which are applications in immersive, yet low cost, and location-based game creation.
Our process is diverse in technology, project type, and ultimate economic opportunity. New for-profit companies are created on an ongoing basis from projects or initiatives generated within PGL, but we also continue to maintain in-house non-profit efforts (including open source projects under permissive MIT license). We operate out of 4,500 sq feet of studio space at 30 South 15th Street (5th Floor), Philadelphia PA, looking out over City Hall, and currently employ 36 full time developers. These employees are primarily graduate students or recent graduates of Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Temple University, as we as numerous other smaller entities. Our efforts are funded by commissioned work, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania DCED, and donors/grants.
