Kingsport, TN Chamber event focuses on bringing new auto technologies to market


Kingsport Times-News -- The next big startup ideas in 21st Century auto technology got a test drive during a recent event held at the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce. Six of those ideas were pitched to a group called autoXLR8R — an auto business startup program based in Middle Tennessee — plus members of AccelNow, located at the Kingsport chamber.

Both autoXLR8R and Accel-Now are focused on bringing new auto technologies to market, and at least getting those ideas to the business incubator stage to draw interest from investors.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker Announces First 12 Investing in Manufacturing Communities


U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced the first 12 communities that will be designated Manufacturing Communities as part of the Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP) initiative. The U.S. Commerce Department-led program is designed to accelerate the resurgence of manufacturing in communities nationwide by supporting the development of long-term economic development strategies that help communities expand private investment in manufacturing and increase international trade and exports.

2013 Global South Summit

Each November, the Summit convenes top senior level decision makers from around the world with a distinctive focus on innovation to create abundance of food, health and prosperity. As the keystone of the CumberlandCenter’s convening activities, the Summit is a neutral forum without bias. The Summit builds on the idea that business is the economic engine of global prosperity and innovation.

SSTI: U.S. R&D spending and intensity by state, 2006-2011


In a recent blog article, SSTI reports the spending and intensity of U.S. research & development from 2006 to 2011. During this five year period, U.S. total R&D investment grew by 23.37 percent. California, in addition to ranking near the top of the list of R&D-focused states, leads in total R&D spending. In 2011, the state's spending reached $91.4 billion, accounting for more than one-fifth all U.S. research investment. Other high-ranking states include Massachusetts, Texas, Maryland, and New York. 

Cluster-led strategy for Advanced Manufacturing in the South holds promise


The Southern Governors’ Association, under its president Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, recently commissioned the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) to conduct an economic analysis regarding the value of a regional approach to support the South's advanced manufacturing sector.
