Launched in 2013, TMA Foundation (TMAF) focuses on: Workforce Development (including OceanSTEM), Research, and Community Outreach. TMAF is working with over 60 organizations in San Diego County to promote OceanSTEM and helped organize a regional coalition to promote maritime workforce development. TMA (prior to the creation of TMAF) co-sponsored the San Diego Maritime Industry Report 2012 with the SD Regional Economic Development Corporation and the SD Workforce Partnership – a first-of-its-kind study in the U.S. prepared by ERISS Corporation. It showed that the maritime industry (the Blue Economy) was the largest “innovation industry” in San Diego county with 46,000 direct jobs, $14 billion in direct revenue and significant per annum growth across 14 industry sectors. There is a growing recognition at economic and political levels in San Diego and the State of California of the importance of the Blue Economy and the fast growing BlueTech subset. On a national level, TMA and ERISS were chosen by NOAA IOOS (Integrated Ocean Observing System) program office to prepare a first-ever study on the economic impact of the ocean observation sector in the U.S. TMA Foundation published a Marine Spatial Planning in San Diego & Stakeholder Overview in March 2014 and a BlueTech Supply Chain Study in May 2014. The final report on the Economic Impact of the Ocean Observation Sector in the U.S. is expected to be published in summer 2015.
